Homework

Homework will be given on a Friday to be returned for the following Thursday. It will normally be a Maths and English piece allowing them to practise and reinforce what we have done through the course of the week, or to practise and get ready for the following week.

Homework set will vary from paper based and internet based. If there is an internet based homework, I will provide all necessary access information for you and your child. Children will receive rewards in school for excellent homework, returned on time.

Spelling and grammar will take a key focus this year in Year 5 and children will be tested on their spellings every Wednesday and given new words to learn. The spellings will be a range of the common exception words for Years 5 and 6 as well as words taken from the New Curriculum for Years 5 and 6. We have discrete grammar sessions daily. Children will also have a focused reading session during reading for meaning each week.

Times tables are incredibly important in Key Stage Two so children need to practise as much as they can. Children will be given the appropriate times table for them to learn and it is their responsibility to practise. Our weekly times tables test is every Monday.

If you have the chance to test them, could you ask the questions out of order so they are not just learning the pattern – thanks.

We will be trying hard as a class to improve our reading and as a result will be making a conscious effort to read at least three times a week at home. When you listen to your child read, please sign their reading diaries to acknowledge this. It would also be really helpful if you could ask them about what they have read to test their comprehension. Reading books and diaries should be brought to school every day. Children will be visited by the ‘reading fairy’ and those who have read 3 times that week will have a chance to win a book from her hamper.

If you or your child have any problems with any of the homework, please pop in and let me know.
