Year 1

Autumn Term 2018

Dear Parents

Welcome to a new school year!  Year 1 is a very important milestone in your child’s learning as they move gradually into more formal learning, and I am delighted to have the privilege of teaching them this year.  They have come into their new class full of confidence and enthusiasm to learn, and they have all made an excellent start.

This half term our topic is called Party Planners and I have attached a curriculum map for your information.

General information

  • Drop in.  During September I will be available in the classroom at the end of the school day, if you need to discuss anything relating to your child’s settling in to Y1.  Please feel free to drop in, no appointment is needed.
  • Year 1 staff.  As well as myself, the Teaching Assistant in Class 1 is Mrs Burton.
  • PE in Class 1 will usually be on Wednesday and Thursday.  Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school with the items clearly labelled.  As the weather gets cooler they may of course wear jogging bottoms and trainers outdoors but they will also need an indoor kit too.  Girls need to have spare socks please if they come to school in tights.
  • Book changing is on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
  • Forest School. The children will be going to Forest School this half term on Friday afternoons, starting next week.  Would you please send in suitable clothes for them to keep in school: wellingtons, trousers, long sleeved top, spare socks and a coat that you don’t mind getting muddy on the following dates:

Friday 14th Sept

Friday 21st Sept

Friday 28th Sept

Friday 5th Oct

Friday 12th Oct

Friday 19th Oct

Homework in Year 1

  • Reading.  We ask you to aim to read with your child daily, for around 10 minutes.  Please make a note in their reading record of whether or not they have completed their book, or the page number that they have reached.  Please aim to read each book twice with your child as this helps them to build their confidence and fluency. Please send your child’s reading record book and reading book into school daily, as we need them in class.  We reward frequent reading in Y1 with stickers and other treats, but please do not worry if you are unable to read with your child occasionally for whatever reason – we understand that “things happen”!
  • Spelling.  We will start to send home spelling words later in the school year.
  • Weekly homework.  We also send home a Maths based homework task each Friday, which we ask to be returned to school by the following Wednesday.

I know I am going to enjoy teaching your children, and I thank you in advance for your support, as we work together to help them enjoy their learning and achieve their full potential.

Best wishes, Mrs Johnston
