Year 2

Autumn Term 2017

Dear Parents

Welcome to a new school year!  Year 2 is a very important milestone in your child’s learning and I am delighted to have the privilege of teaching them this year.  They have come into their new class full of confidence and enthusiasm to learn, and they have all made an excellent start.

This half term our topic is called The Incredibles and I have attached a curriculum map for your information.  In Year 2 the children begin to join their handwriting and I would ask for your help and support at home, so I am also sending details about this on the back of this letter.

General information

  • Year 2 staff.  As well as myself, the staff in Class 2 are Mrs Burton and Mrs Greenhouse (Teaching Assistants) and on Wednesday the class teacher will be Mrs Goddard.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call into class either before school if it’s something we can help with easily, or at the end of the school day.
  • Y2 SATs meeting.  There will be an information meeting for parents this term to give you all the details we can about national end of Y2 assessments (date to follow).  We encourage you to attend this session so that you can find out more about how we teach Maths and English in Y2 and expectations for their attainment.
  • PE in Class 2 will usually be on Tuesdays and Fridays.  Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school with the items clearly labelled.  As the weather gets cooler they may of course wear jogging bottoms and trainers outdoors but they will also need an indoor kit too.  Girls need to have spare socks please if they come to school in tights.
  • Class 2 Website page.  We have our own page on the school website which we aim to update regularly with details of our learning and links to games and activities – keep checking for news!

Homework in Year 2

  • Reading.  We ask you to aim to read with your child daily, for around 10 minutes.  Please make a note in their reading record of whether or not they have completed their book, or the page number that they have reached.  As the children become more confident and reflective readers in Y2 I will begin asking them to write their own comments about their reading too.  Please send your child’s reading record book and reading book into school daily, as we need them in class.  We reward frequent reading in Y2 with stickers and other treats, but please do not worry if you are unable to read with your child occasionally for whatever reason – we understand that “things happen”!
  • Spelling.  Spelling words are issued on Monday and tested on Friday.  Each child will receive their own personal list of words based on a test we have done in class, so they may not have the same words as their friends.  If your child misspells a word in the spelling test they will have it again on their list until they are successful; also if your child spells a word correctly in the test but then isn’t confident about applying the correct spelling in their day-to-day writing then they will have that word to learn again.
  • Maths games.  This term we are trialling sending home Maths games from our Y2 collection – more details to follow shortly.
  • Weekly homework.  We also send home a Maths or English based homework task each Friday, which we ask to be returned to school by the following Wednesday.

I know I am going to enjoy teaching your children, and I thank you in advance for your support, as we work together to help them achieve their full potential in their learning.

Best wishes

Mrs Johnston
