Art Curriculum Statement

'Learning God's Way'

Intent

It is our intent at St. Mary's Primary School to provide pupils with a high-quality art curriculum, which develops creativity, sets challenges, engages and inspires children and equips them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.

Aims: The national curriculum for Art aims to ensure that all pupils:

1. Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences

2. Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art techniques.

3. Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art and design.

4. Know about great artists and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Implementation

We use Kapow as our scheme of work for Art. Our art curriculum is blocked throughout the year and allows learning to be scaffolded so year on year children can improve on skills in three particular areas; sketching, painting and 3d modelling. Children also learn about various artists in every year group to strengthen their knowledge of a diverse selection of artists. Where appropriate we use workshops, exhibitions and local trips to deepen the children’s understanding and enjoyment of this subject. Subject leaders are responsible for ensuring that resources are kept up to date and to create action plans for subject development. Teachers and children are surveyed at the end of each unit of learning to collate staff and pupil’s opinions, to inform further planning and resourcing. Subject leaders check ongoing planning to ensure full coverage of the National Curriculum. Progression documents have been created to support teachers with the delivery and assessment of art across the school.

Impact

The impact of the art  curriculum at St. Mary's Primary School is that we ensure that our children progress to secondary school with the confidence to express their creativity in the subject. They have a good understanding of art and design and its impact on culture and history. They know about artists and designers and how they have influenced the world and country. They are confident that they have the skills to attempt all elements of art and design.
