Our Reception Class

Ofsted Report 2026
Children get off to a flying start in the early years. Leaders and staff build secure
relationships with children and their parents and carers. They work closely with families and
external support, where appropriate, to identify and overcome barriers. Staff deployment is
responsive and additional adult support is used skilfully so that more vulnerable children,
including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities, learn alongside their
peers. As a result, children quickly settle into school. They feel safe, happy and ready to
learn.

Leaders ensure that children learn what they need to in order to start reading and writing
fluently. Whole-class and small-group phonics teaching is effective, as is the teaching of
early number and mathematics. As a result, children are typically being well prepared for
learning in Year 1 and beyond, although not all children achieve as highly as they could by
the end of early years.

Leaders and staff have a sharp focus on developing children’s communication and
vocabulary. Staff model language effectively and extend vocabulary through purposeful play
and stories. Leaders have taken careful decisions which promote routines and children’s
readiness for learning. The curriculum is well designed, and adults provide engaging
activities that stimulate curiosity.

Hello and a warm welcome to Acorn Class

In Acorn Class we have lots of fun and learn through a mixture of play-based, child-initiated and adult-led activities. We have a lovely big classroom with our own outside area, which allows free flow for the children. There are lots of things to do in our classroom. We are very active and enjoy a range of activities such as baking, craft activities and outdoor fun. We learn lots about the world and each other in Reception and enjoy exploring a range of topics such as: All about me, People who help us, Seaside and Pirates, Once upon a time and All creatures great and small.

Our outdoor environment is a continuation of our classroom and allows children to explore resources which support the Early Years Curriculum. We have two on-site forest school areas that the children use in their weekly forest school sessions.

To ensure that you are part of your child's learning journey we use a fantastic app called Seesaw and this enables us and you to track and share the wonderful work the children do on a daily basis both at home and at school. It is also used as a communication tool so that you are able to share WOW moments as well as any worries you may have.

In Reception we use Read, Write Inc .to support early reading. This is then continued through KS1 to ensure progression and continuity in children early reading journey. To find out more information about the program we use please follow the links below and also see our phonics page.
