Year 1

Autumn Term 2020

Welcome to Year 1!

Year 1 is a very important milestone in your child’s learning. The Autumn Term will be very play-based learning following a more Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) approach, before we move on to more formal learning later on in the academic year.

Homework in Year 1

  • Reading We ask you to aim to read with your child daily, for around 10 minutes.  Please send a message on Seesaw when they have completed their book and a short comment. Please aim to read each book at least twice with your child as this helps them to build their confidence and fluency. Please return your child's book on a Monday and Thursday if they have read it. Reading books will be changed on a Monday and Thursday where needed.
  • Spelling Spellings will be sent home on Friday. These spellings are based on the sounds that we have been learning in school and a couple of common exception words or red words. There will be an informal spelling 'quiz' on a Friday. There are also spelling games to play on Spelling Shed which are linked to our Read Write Inc. phonics.
  • Maths No formal Maths homework is set, however, please practise counting regularly. This could be counting money when shopping, toys or small objects, steps around the garden or cutlery when setting the table... there's lots of opportunities for this type of learning in our daily lives! Number bonds to 10 are also very key to Maths in Year 1, there are lots of online games to play involving these. Hit the Button is normally a Year 1 favourite!
